Playing HD DVDs & PS3 region coding!

Options
Hello,
I have ordered an HD TV. If I buy some HD DVDs, can these be played on a normal DVD player or do I need to buy an HD player? I am also getting a PS3 which I understand plays 'Blu-ray' discs. Are Blu-ray films in HD or is it 2 different things, and if so, which is best? Also, does the PS3 play HD as well as Blue ray? I basically need to know whether I need an HD DVD player as well as a PS3!

Qu.2: Is the PS3 region coded for playing films? If so, how do you un-code it (if you can) like DVD players.

Thanks for any help!

  • PS: I also just read that films are no longer being made in HD? Is this true, and if so, why, if most people are just in the process of buying HD TVs? Is Blu-ray the thing of the future? Thanks again!

    DONT buy a HD player
    Theyre pretty much obsolete now
Buy blu rays and play through the PS3 (You need a hdmi lead)
The PS3 DOESNT play HD dvds
The PS3 IS region coded, but a LOT of films do actually work on it (And it cant be 'chipped' im afraid)

Tells you wether a films 'region free' or not

  • Will Blu-ray play on a normal DVD player (although obviously the picture won't be as good, would it still work?), thanks again!

    No ~ sorry
Though the PS3 will UPSCALE normal dvds (Making them 'possibly' look better, depending on your tv)

No, the disks are the same size, but that's about the only similarity. You need a Blu-Ray player to play them.
  • Are all PSP3 games Blue-ray? Thanks again.

I dont think ALL are, but certainly most are on bluray. Im concerned why you asked the question though?
You still NEED a PS3 to play them, wether theyre on bluray or dvd

  • Don't be concerned ;)

I've ordered a PS3 and just looking at games. If some are Blu-ray and some not, I just wanted a blu-ray game to see if you could tell the difference from normal games, that's all.
