Removing tiles from plasterboard

I recently had our bathroom retiled, but sadly the person who did it - cash in hand (I know, but he was recommended:o) turned out to be hopeless. I'm talking a drop of 2cm in the level of the border from one side of the door to the other here!. I can't live with it so have decided to redo it myself. Some tiles have come off quite easily, but some are directly onto plasterboard and are trashing the board as they come off. On a wall that is only about 1/3 tiled, should I try to salvage the plasterboard and get the appropriate bits reskimmed or pull the whole lot off?
Is there an easy way to remove tiles from plasterboard?

Thank you for your quick replies.
Next question then - is aquapanel any good, and do you need to/can you skim the bits that arn't going to be tiles? It's going to be a small job and getting a plasterer to do it will probably be difficult.I have plenty of willpower - it's won't power I need.

It's not pretty is it?:rotfl:
I only got someone in to do the tiling because I didn't have time to do the job myself:rolleyes:.I have plenty of willpower - it's won't power I need.

I had exactly this problem with removing tiles from plaster board. The tiles ripped the paper from the face of the board and it then broke up. It is easy to replace. Just cut away the damaged board and replace it where necessary. The cause of the problem was that the board had not been skimmed, it was feather edged board that had the joints taped and filled. This is a perfectly acceptable way of dry lining, but it requires several coats of paint if you are going to tile on it. I learned the hard way.I can afford anything that I want.
Just so long as I don't want much.0 -

There is no need to skim plasterboard before you tile. In fact, the recommended weight of tile per sq mtr is slightly reduced on a skimmed wall. As for painting, no need if you are tiling. A painted area is not the best surface for tiling.
The use of aquaboard is recommended for shower areas and where your bath is.
In fact, there is a school of thought that goes - you should tank the shower area before tiling.0 -
Thank you for all your replies. Looking at the mess again, it looks as though I might get away with removing an area about 1m square. Any ideas how to do this easily? The board is so manky I think getting a straight edge might be difficult.I have plenty of willpower - it's won't power I need.

Difficult without more info
Plasterboard fixed to battens ??
Hold straight edge ( piece of wood !!) cut with Stanley knife/ pad saw ( wont be easy ,
worried about pipes/wiring so wont advise anything too aggressive)
If its more than 'about 1m square' take full piece out. Then at least you can fix back to orig batten0
