"Energy Saving" GU10 light bulbs

Options
as title says - but do they exist

these bulbs seem to be a waste of money as they don't last long and you need a good few to get a room to be well lit - which means they aren't really as economical as the bayonet ones

thanks

Standard GU10 lightbulbs are not supposed to be 'energy saving'. Energy saving alternatives (that fit the same light sockets) do exist however.

I've answered you in your other thread.

    Quick summary:

    2 options: LED and CFL

LED - very expensive to buy ones that are as bright normal halogen ones. also can give off a "cold" light. But they are the same size as normal halogen ones and use only about 1 watt each.

CFL - much cheaper than LED but still over £5 per bulb (based on replacing 50W halogen with 11W CFL). Good ones give off warm light. Major downside is that they are longer in size than normal halogens so won't look right in certain places.
  • The only energy saving bulbs that are the same length as 'standard' GU10 bulbs AFAIK are made by Aurora. They can be picked up for approx £7 off ebay if you buy several at once. Apparently they aren't as good quality as Megaman but they are cheaper and, for me, their size is fairly crucial so that my fittings don't look 'odd'.

  • I used to go through loads of GU10 bulbs until i got a dimmer switch. (used to last 3-6 months)
The one ive got gradually applies power at switch on and haven't changed any for a year.
Think it was this one i got, was only £25 though, worth it to turn on and dim lights with remote.

Ive had 4 LED GU10 bulbs for about 3-4 years, only one broke, light is nowhere near as bright but ideal for bedroom though.
  • i mentioned this in the other thread just now but megaman do a gu10 which is the same size as a standard bulb but it is 5w and may not give off enough light on its own.
  • thanks - got good suggestions on both threads - thanks for them all.
