You are not only being harsh, but also quite misleading.

I find it rather ironic for you to accuse me of being misleading - then you quoting the most misleading source of energy prices of them all - the comparison sites !

We do agree on one thing; many of the "shock/horror" stories were just scares - but they panicked a lot of people into grabbing capped/fixed price deals widely and heavily advertised by the suppliers. Would I be a little cynical to say these were linked !

I am afraid, and this was the point of my OP, that many people were "suckered" by these offers, and actually believed that their entire energy bill would be capped at £60 a month ! Perhaps you were one too
• Thanks for all the replies (even the harsh one ;) ). I will be calling SP tomorrow to find out what they are on about now.

He assured me it was £60. And even if I used £100 of gas and electric, I will still be charged the £60. And I wouldn't get a bill at the end of it either. That would last 3 months and then be reviewed, and if my useage was more, I would go on the next capped rate of £80 pm.

B@$ta@rd lol. Yeah I might sound a sucker, but tbh my husband used to deal with all of the utilities and then when we split recently I took it all over so this is totally new to me:o

Thanks all
• Either you were misled or you misunderstood. But he was probably correct in saying your DD would be kept at £60pm for three months. And no, you won't get a bill for the excess, it will be carried forward and your DD increased.

Forget about the monthly DD and make the comparisons by looking at the price per kwh. Even if you go for a fixed or capped rate, you're unlikely to be able to reduce your DD by much with price rises kicking in, unless you can reduce the number of units you use.

Whatever you do, don't go for a lower DD unless you put by the rest of it - it'll catch up with you. If it's in a bank earning interest, you can make a lump sum payment and keep your DD the same.
• Hi WellaYella

I apologise for being a bit rude in my earlier post. What makes my blood boil is these companies attempts to pull the wool over consumers eyes. Magenta Sue is correct, completely forget about the DD amount this a red herring.

If you need help working out your bills for Gas and Elecy let us know as there are plenty of peole on here to help out.

Good luck.
• You may be as harsh and call me a numpty as much as you wish, because yes, I have officially had the wool pulled over my eyes.

The agent lied and I am fuming. I have spoken to SP this morning and they confirm he did not give me a true representation of what the package is. In fact it is more than what I am currently paying.

Must say SP were very helpful when I called to cancel, and cancelled it over the phone and were very understanding that I had be well and truely HAD!!!

DOH! Back to my belief of 'NEVER BUY AT THE DOOR AGAIN!'
• Could someone please help me with comparing gas/elec prices. When you go onto these sites they ask you for either your current monthly dd amount or the amount of units used in a month/quarter. After filling this in I was informed that British Gas would be cheaper than NPower. This is puzzling because the amount of units used or monthly dd surely has no relevance to how much can be saved by switching supplier. Surely the only way to do this is to give the consumer a list of the price per unit charged by each supplier and any offers attached to these. Advice would be much appreciated

Slimjess, to my mind, the best way of comparing is by using the number of units or Kwh consumed.
Some of these tarrifs have 2 tiers and the lower rates kick in at different amounts of Kwh, also some have a standing charge, but a lower Kwh price.
