british gas: am i getting a good deal?

I have just spoken to british gas who we get our gas and electricity from we pay monthly with an electronic card which we take to a paypoint.

They have told me that the minimum amounts we can pay ar £50 on electricity and £45 for gas, we are supposed to be on their essentials tarrif.

I do not have a clue about energy prices so no idea if this price is high or low, any suggestions on whether i should be looking to switch?

not really , we switched to another supplier , they sent 5 yes 5 letters asking for more money before they would accept the final reading already given , nightmare to call , nightmare to deal with

im just really confused as i dont have a clue about how you are billed for it or how to work out what our useage is or even how to go about switching if we need to
