Any advice please!!

Hi there please can anyone help,my son has just started Uni and we live in wales but he's studying in England, now due to the course not being available in Wales he misses out on the Welsh Assembley funding!! I'm so mad they won't even consider any help as rules are rules!! He's the first one in the family to go to Uni and we will definitely struggle as we have 2 others at home (another wanting to go in 3 years!). Although he has signed up for all the loans and student account it's in no way going to be enough to get him through 4 years of study. We've tried all the local routes of sponsorship or bursaries to no avail. Does anyone know if we would be eligible for any help from the English goverment? Thanks in advance X

TBH a lot of english students are in the same situation. My daughter has found that even with the full loan and grant, she has nothing to live on this year-her accomodation alone at Kent (no food included!) is £4,700,then of course the fees on top of that. Her course is only available at Kent and Aberystwyth-she would have been marginally better off if she had gone to aber but she preferred Kent so is desperately looking for a part time job.A similar course was available at Aberdeen, but not exactly the same, she would have got the course without fees up there but again took a decision to do exactly the course she wanted-as your son has.

Some Uni's do have special burseries/hardship payments which he could explore but really those should have been looked into earlier in the process.

Mostly I think Welsh residents get a very good deal ie free prescriptions etc so I suppose it's a bit of a shock to find out what it's like for us poor english people lol!

Are welsh students studying in England any worse off than english students studying in England?

(Only ask because my son almost has dual nationality (welsh/ english) and never thought to see if he would be better off coming from Wales to his course.)

As I have said silvercar,my daughter is in the same position. Generally Wales and Scotland have many advantages over English people-yes I am jealous lol!- but it is at it is,many students are strugling whilst some in my daughters flat have taken full loans to put into Isas as there parents care well off enough to fund everything. I am on IS and have a disabled child, money is very tight and I lost all CTC and CB for her end of August so will find it very difficult to send her any money. Very depressing!

We haven't had a ny sort of holiday for years and I fully expect not to whilst my daughter is at Uni-but hopefully at the end it will be worth it if she gets a great career (she is doing an Englsih and Spanish Law degree.)

loan to cover full cost of fees (£3000 approx) plus a maintenance loan that is partly means tested. Non-means tested is about 3600, for the lowest income brackets there would be an additional £1200 (approx) that is given as a grant rather than loan.

So my son gets the tuition fees paid, but as a loan. He also gets a maintenance loan of about £3600 that doesn't quite cover his hall fees and that is it.

I wondered if he would have got more if he went to an english university but came from Wales.

We have to pay ALL fees. Many students have to take a student loan and will end up with probably £30,000 debt by the end of their course,my daughters degree is 4 years plus then she has to take a year at Law school which currently costs another £8,000!

She was told she would have to pay half the fees if she went to Aber or aberdeen.

As that is what the OP's son is doing it would appear not.

  • silvercar that is exactly the same as us. So no tution fees paid if from and studying in England, it's gonna be tough for us!

Doesn't he get a loan for the fees?
