Money saving in Reading / Berkshire

I've only just moved here so I was wondering if anyone has any good moneysaving tips for around here.

I have one - I get my hair cut free at the hairdresser's Stevijax in the Meadway (RG30). Model haircuts are free every Friday afternoon, done by a student, and they're not bad.

Thanks for any tips...!

    Hi there,

Lidl is always a good one for food shopping and they often have specials which range from homeware to toys etc.

Visit http://www.lidl.co.uk and enter your postcode in the bottom right hand corner of the page to find your nearest store.
  • Just wanted to say hi as I live in the same area, of Reading. Hope things are going well and you have found ways of saving money??
  • Any Reading people about?
  • Hi all :)

Know this was a bit old, but figured there must be other Reading posters out there!

Here are some of my tips:
'Smelly alley' - great butchers, fishmongers, grocers, amongst others....
Good markets up by st marys butts - also where the pound and 99p stores are!
Get season tickets for bus fares - works out cheaper. Broad street mall has a reading transport stall.....

    Anyone have any more?

    Remember the MoneySaving mantras!

    IF YOU'RE SKINT......
Do I need it? Can I afford it? Can I find it cheaper anywhere else?

    IF YOU'RE NOT SKINT......
Will I use it? Is it worth it? Can I find it cheaper anywhere else?
  • no more tips except to say that make sure you have a reading passport - it gets you a little bit off random things at the hexagon and the council pools.

Since I'm becoming more intimately acquainted with the Royal Berks Hospital than I'd like, here's one! If you buy a drink in their cafe, and go back later with the receipt, you can get a refill (in a clean cup so no need to keep it!) for just £1!

Actually the assistant remembered us (can't think why, 3 apparently mad women, 2 of them obviously quite deaf and 1 apparently dumb as she was writing everything down rather than speaking!) and just gave us the discount automatically.

The Oracle doesn't have a loyalty card does it? Cabot Circus in Bristol does and you can pick up a free bottle of water every day, lots of other special offers too like buy 12 Millies Cookies and get 12 free! Can't see anything on their website.

    OK, updating my own information.

No, the Oracle doesn't have a loyalty card, I asked.

And the main restaurant in the Royal Berks apparently sells tea for £1 in the first place. Now I just have to find it ... although atm I'm mostly buying the Spiced Hot Apple Tea from the AMT cart, which is AMAZING!

  • I'm not entirely convinced by the MSE of the meat stall up smelly alley, although for the most part the grocers seems good.
  • And I'll second the spiced apple... yummy :D And it's the lowest calorie thing AMT have I believe!!!

That hadn't crossed my mind, I had assumed it was full of sugar, but frankly I don't care because it is so amazing! Especially if you have the least hint of a sore throat or cough.
