bidder no longer registered issue?

Hi

Was wondering if I could get some advice in regard to an issue I have with something I recently sold on ebay. It is as follows:

I have recieved a cheque from the bidder, which should clear in a day or two. I was about to contact the bidder as I had lost his / her postage address and have noticed that he / she is no longer a registered user.

I've contacted Ebay, but they have not been of much use. What should I do, should I send the item out, contact the bidder?

Any help would be great, thanks.

    Hi pin,

I would try to contact the bidder first of all. There might be a valid reason why they are NARU. If the cheque clears then I see no reason why you can't send the item. If you need their details you should be able to get them by clicking on advanced search and Find Contact Information.

Let us know how it goes.

    Hi

Cheers for getting back to me so quickly. I've emailed the bidder, will see what he says.

The problem is that may bank has told me even though may cheque will clear, there is up to 20 days when the money can be clawed back.

How much was the cheque for? If it is for a lot I wouldn't risk sending them something without knowing 100% that you have the money. You could try and ring the buyer, that is probably the best thing to do.

If you are in doubt, then you could send them their money back with a letter explaining as they are now a NARU you do not have to finish the transaction. I would expect the buyer to contact you to let you know what is going on, but that probably won't happen. :-/

    Hi

Actually the buyer had contacted me. I asked him to give a reason why he is no longer registered. His response is as follows:

"It is because I no longer plan to use Ebay...is that a problem? Will you still send the notebook card?"

Originally the buyer had a feedback of 10, but only registered mid October of this year.

    What garbage is this?

    Is it a normal cheque?
    Who do you bank with?
Do you have a very special / weird account or something?

If the cheque has been paid in and it has cleared, then the money is yours. No way can it be extracted afterwards.

This has been discussed to death on the ebay newsgroups and it does appear that cheques can be recalled days after they supposedly cleared under certain circumstances.

I had one last year, was not returned to me as 'refer to drawer' until day 9 and after the funds showed as cleared on my account on day 4.

The suggestion on the dedicated newsgroup is that if you are worried about a cheque to phone the bank a day after the funds show as cleared and ask them to confirm that the cheque isn't sitting in the system somewhere waiting to come back. As most banks record their telephone call centre conversations this should give you a lever if the cheque subsequently gets returned.

I hate accepting cheques, I've had more problems with them than I ever have with paypal. I have a major problem at the moment, paid in a small cheque to my account and the bank have misread the cheque and credited £300+ instead of £3+ . I am furious that they have changed my credit slip total and not even bothered to tell me and now they are saying they wouldn't have altered the credit slip so my bank balance must be right and that it could take days to retrieve the credit slip and see why too much money has been credited to my account. Meanwhile my buyer has had over £300 debited from his account which has blocked his direct debit and standing order payments and is causing him tons of problems.

Don't know what garbage it is, just telling you what my bank (or should I say building society told me).

I bank with Nationwide, and NO I don't have a special / weird account, just a normal run of the mill flex (current) account.

JPS: the amount was for £19.50. Will probably send the item to the bidder.

However may follow the advice of calling Nationwide and checking the money is cleared.

Thanks for all those who gave (constructive) suggestions.

    You missed the point
If the cheque has been paid in and it has cleared, then the money is yours. No way can it be extracted afterwards.

and it has cleared is the relevant bit.
It cannot be claimed back AFTER IT HAS BEEN CLEARED.

This may not be after the 3 or 5 or 7 days after banking, and whilst your bank may allow you to draw funds against it after this (these) varying periods it has not neccessarily "cleared"
Once it has genuinely cleared, it cannot be removed, refunded, withdrawn

The problem is that my bank has told me even though my cheque will clear, there is up to 20 days when the money can be clawed back.

In this case IT HAS NOT CLEARED !

Have a look at these two links. While a cheque may be cleared, the money can still be claimed back:

Unfortunately I can confirm that cheques can be recalled after they are supposedly cleared.

I have alluded a couple of times on here about a current problem i have, a cheque was given to me for £3.50 and was paid into my account and I have a receipt. However the bank credited it as £350 and the person who sent it to me has had problems with their bank account being massively overdrawn.

Obviously the money is not mine and I am happy that the problem needs to be sorted and the money returned but the cheque has been 'cleared' for nearly a month and the bank are struggling to find the paperwork. The bank have confirmed though that once the issuing bank request a reversal of the transaction my bank will accept that reversal.
