Any advice welcome!- computer coma!

Options
Hi,
I have no idea what to do about this:

I have a problem with my computer, I sometimes leave it to 'sleep'. Just as I am leaving the room and intending on using the computer 30 minutes later. I either just leave it and it puts itself to sleep or I click the 'sleep' button on the computer screen.

But when I return and try to use the computer...nothing. I can see the 'on' button is still lit up, and if I carry on moving the mouse or clicking on the keyboard, the computer either hums or makes that 'ding' noise- as if you pressed a button and you get that warning error 'ding' noise. But the screen stays black.

I have tried everything I can think of! I have tried waiting until it sorts itself out- up to 20 minutes of pressing the keyboard, making sure the screen is still on, moving and clicking the mouse... pressing ctrl-alt-del, nothing, a humming from the computer, but nothing, the screen is still black. I have looked into the control panel to check that's all fine, it is. There is nothing that says to ever shut down the computer after so many minutes of sleep. Just that it should go to sleep after 20 minutes of being idle. But it seems my computer gets to coma status instead of sleep

I end up having to turn it off at the wall, without having shut it down this results in me getting a message warning me I did not shut down and makes the normally 15 minutes start up take about 25 minutes- its so frustrating!

Has anyone had anything similar? I called up Dell (where I got the computer about 2 years ago) who told me I needed to pay them £40 to wipe m,y computer to factory settings and then it would be fine...yeah, it may be fine, but all my stuff wont be!

If anyone has any advice I would be more then grateful! I have had this problem about 3 weeks now and the only thing I have installed recently was Avast and that was 4 weeks ago.
