Can I upgrade my train ticket to first class?

Can you upgrade from normal to first class for only a small fee on the train? Travelling down from liverpool to london euston on friday morning and wondered if it was possible to do this at all. Can't afford full price first class unfortunately, thought I might be able to money save my way into first class!!:rotfl:

No you can't - not on a Friday anyway.

Some companies offer cheap upgrades at weekends.

Isn't there one first class carriage for people with second class tickets on that route?

not since the beginning of September. It was only an easement over the summer.

This was in Martin's cheap train travel tips

"Get free first class in the dining car
Some longer journeys still have first class dining cars as well as the standard buffet. These are often open to all diners, whatever class their ticket is. So go in and order a meal; while it's a bit more expensive, you can effectively travel in first class luxury for a second class price and some grub.
It's worth knowing, they do have the right to kick you back to where you belong (i.e. second class!) once you've finished eating, but it rarely happens"

The West Coast Mainline "intercity" (giving it the old name) is operated by Virgin Trains, using (99% of the time) class 390 trains, they don't have a buffet car, they do have a small shop in the standard class on the train.

For first class you must upgrade BEFORE travel, getting caught out could mean you have to pay the penalty fare of the FULL OPEN price for the journey and that is going to be expensive, or even worse (and some RPI's will do this) you get reported for fare evasion!

Try upgrading at the ticket office, or with the train manager before travel, sometimes you might get a deal, but as someone has already said, your travelling at peak time so not really likely, but if you don't blag you don't get.
These are my thoughts and no one else's, so like any public forum advice - check it out before entering into contracts or spending your hard earned cash!

I don't know everything, however I do try to point people in the right direction but at the end of the day you can only ever help yourself!
