Can anyone point me to a cheap place to get a replacement 'superdrive' for an imac? I've been asked to replace one for a friend as I've done various PC's and laptops for people, I appreciate mac's are a little less straightforward but am keen to give it a go.

Have you looked on eBay? There are generally a few on there.
Depending on the model, replacing the innards of an iMac can be a lot more involved than doing the same with a PC. The Core Duos are very tightly put together.0 -
Yup, seen a couple on ebay and they are generally looking at £50 odd delivered. Just wondering if there was somewhere that people generally got the spare drives from.
I've had a quick look online at a place that covered HDD upgrades and it looks like it will be a barrel of laughs.Space for rent, apply within - Free trial on Thanks button though0 -
I don't think you're going to find them for much cheaper than that unfortunately. If you have anywhere that repairs Macs locally, they might have one lying around.
Just make sure you really research what you're doing. They're not the sort of computers you can just open up for a tinker (not if you want to put them back together again anyway!).0 -
The iMac is a bit tricky, most Mac superdrives have to match the system to be recognised by Mac OS X, the most common replacement is the Pioneer drive (112D etc), I've added an additional one to a G4 tower - but the iMac is a different beast. (If you don't use a matching drive such as the Pioneer, OS X native apps can't burn DVDs - e.g. iDVD, but you can still use the drive to read/write CDRWs, but need a 3rd party app for DVD writing).
Try asking on the hardware forum at www.macuser.co.uk someone will guide you.0
