HDD problems!

Options
I'm finally back on line after 1 broken PSU, 2 toasted mobo's and 2 kaput HDD's!!
However, still have a problem with No1 daughters PC after a few days of running fine, it now just cycles through loading to show windows emblem a microsecond flash of a BSOD and switches off then on again through cycle. Safe modes or last good config settings give same problem? Booting from Win XP disk loads but wants to format 'cos HDD is full or damaged - it does not recognise the file system but shows correct capacity. Is there anything I can use to repair the drive? I've not tried using it as a slave in another machine - in case its got a nasty virus etc or am I being too cautious! We're trying not to format the drive 'cos of all her itunes stored on the disk. Any thing else to try?

    Pop it into another PC.
Ubuntu is an ancient African word, meaning: 'I can't configure Debian'.
  • Good news is it is probably a software fault as the Windows screen does pop up which means the HDD is being read. Viruses do not cause hardware failures, most of the time. Also you mention that she's got itunes, a dirty little secret is that if you enable "Hidden Files" in the folder options and then navigate into the ipod through My Computer you will find all her music with scrambled names in folders marked with a serial. You can then transfer those folders onto the desktop then use the "Add to Library" function on itunes to "re-tag" the music.

Bad news if you have stuff on the HDD that you need retreiving it will be a learning process

  • Put it into another pc as last resort (as slave), and new pc detected it straight away and automatically ran chkdsk. It deleted loads of orphaned files and then finally loaded up. However, it shut down automatically! I rebooted again and when desktop loaded started AVG scan straight away - it discovered loads of issues as did Spybot! Having removed all offending items and some dodgy looking games it seems to be stable at the moment with no loss of data - lucky for my daughter!!
