Which one of these is the safest to put my savings in ?

    You cannot buy shares in Britannia so you cannot invest in them. A&L are about to be taken over by Santander so you would have to buy their shares. However, they are not listed on the UK stock exchange so you would have a few more hoops to go through to buy them. Plus currency fluctuations can work against you as well as for you.

    However, assuming you have asked the wrong question and mean which is the most financially secure for savings accounts then Santander beats Britannia but really its a non issue as both are unlikely to have any issues.

  • Both are safe A&L are now part of Santander who own Abbey and are one of the soundest banks in the Eurozone. Brittania is a building society and so the stricter fundig rules apply and if they got into trouble(very unlikly) another society would step in, aka Nationwide with Cheshire and Derbyshire.
