Windows XP logging off problem

My friend has a Sony Vaio VGC-M1 which she had been having problems with due to a virus. This resulted in me performing a system recovery for her.I have updated XP to service pack 3, updated all the Sony Vaio updates and installed AVG.
I have left it so that users do not need to enter a password to log on.If a user, any user, logs on and does nothing and logs off again then the computer logs them off in the normal manner. However should a user log on and open an application (for example solitaire), close that application and try to log off the usual screen of "Logging off" followed by "Saving your settings" does not happen.Instead the background goes black and a Log On To Windows box appears which provides the "user name" and "password" sections and gives you the option to log in or shut down.
If the user logs in again and does nothing and logs off then they get logged off in the usual manner.HOWEVER should they open an application again and then try to log off the whole cycle continues.
This problem was not present before the system recovery.I updated my laptop to XP service pack 3 at the same time as the Sony and it does not have this problem.Sorry for the long post but I've tried to be as accurate as I can.
Does anyone have any ideas as to what the problem could be?
Thanks
