I am looking for a savings ac that is branch operated
will open it with £500 initially
am working at the moment, but expecting in march
will be putting money into it until I have the baby, but not sure how much [ probably up to £800 per month], then wont be working, so wont have any spare cash to put away. so reg savers are out of the question.
my isa is filled for the year.
any suggestions please? banks/ building societys?

You need a good instant access branch account.
Skipton are good if there is a local branch, Yorkshire Building Society, Norwich and Peterborough, plus quite a few others - then there are the main group: LTSB/C+G, HSBC, Abbey (wouldn't touch with a bargepole), A+L, NR (if they can be branch operated), NS&I via the Post Office etc.
You'll get the best rates on-line though, top accounts listed at Moneyfacts.0
