Eon billing for a property we moved out of over 1and a half years ago! Help required!

Options
Hello,
I have just had the pleasure of a phone call from E.ON, Chasing a gas bill from a rented property that I moved out of April 2007. When we moved out (we were only there for 6 months) our landlord contacted E.ON with both the gas and electricity readings and gave them our new address. The girl that I spoke to today could not explain why it had taken so long for them to contact me. She did say that there was a problem accessing the meter to read it?? The property is a new house (we were the first people to live there), the gas meter is next to the front door step, on the outside wall of the property. Nobody ever tried to read it when we were there and as our landlord gave them the readings over the phone, I am a little concerned as to how this would prevent them from issuing a bill at the time? I was told by the girl on the phone that 'it wasnt E.Ons fault that I hadn't kept a copy of the meter readings for over 17 months!' I have written a letter to E.On customer services this morning explaining my situation and requesting that someone contact me within 7 working days, hopefully I will have received a copy of the bill by then as well!!! Where do I stand on this? Please help?!?!

The Enerygy Retail Association Billing Code says that they can not back bill more than 12 months if it is their fault. If your landlord provided them with the reading as agreed in April'07 plus your forwarding address I would argue that it is their fault and therefore they have no right to bill you. Hope that helps you.
