turns out I was wrong - its not an amp in the loft just a basic splitter. its a labgear splitter but it hasnt got the proper connectors - the wires are screwed in bare. looks very cheap and bodged so maybe I need to get a better splitter with an amp or booster in?
we did try to connect the exterior aerial lead to the main lead going to the lounge but it didnt work at all because without the connectors, couldnt connect them together properly....

EVERYTHING needs to be connected 'properly' ~ or it simply wont work as it should.
Buy a splitter (2 or 3 way ~ depending on how many connections you need) and all necessary male or female aerial connectors.

the splitter in the loft currently hasnt got the ports for the male/female connectors so basically is a load of old rubbish and is why everythings abit dodgy - I just dont get how the old occupiers got along with it, I can only guess they had something better but wanted to take it with them so left us with that awful thing.
We are def going to get a 'proper' splitter with 'proper' connectors - dont know if that will cue all the problems but its certainly a good start. Do you think we need to get an amp/booster as well?

Thanks for all your help guys!

no dont get the amp just yet. as i said before, try a simple splitter first.
obviously you need all the right male/female connectors. it simply wont work if you dont connect it properly.
the outer shielding must be good all through and must not touch the inner signal wire.
    Get some gorm.

    Amps are a 'last resort'
They do amplify the signal but they also DISTORT the signal (to a degree).
If the splitter doesnt work then you should be looking at a new roof aerial (Or the one you have 'set' correctly.

Obviously I dont know, but i dont think i will need a roof aerial - its only a few years old and HUGE but I think it might possibly need adjusting to another angle. We shall see how it goes.....
