What A joke

After paying over 600 a month in tax and NI for yearssssssssssss, i found myself laid of from work.. and proceded down to the local job center...

What an eye opener that was..

after the nice lady had gone threw my details.. my wife earns 336 a month.. about 83 a week... she informed me. i would get £60 to live on for a wife and 2 children.... intittled to 94.oo a week minus my wifes wage.. ooooooooooooohh!.. needless to say i was very calm after that!..

I suspect that other people have gone threw this situation and some have less to live on.?

I just wonder how people manage to live, with such a small income. with water rates/elec/heating oh yea and food!!!

Rant over.. god knows what to do now..:confused:

  • Hello Robsonru, okey dokey well sit down make self a cup of tea......it is a bit of a shock when it happens...you will find loads of good advice on the boards to help you, and I'm sure someone who knows a lot more than me will be along shortly. Wish I knew about this board when it happend to us about 6 years ago now - when I was told the ammount we would receive - it was the same as we used to spend on a meal out once a week (hangs head in shame)..you know its really not so bad...I know you will be swearing at me...but so many worse things can happen...with sincere best wishes

Im no expert but i think your saying that your getting non contribution JSA? which is subject to deduction from income. BUT you say you have paid tax etc for years so i would have thought you should be getting contribution based JSA for 6 months which you would get even if your wife was earning £20k+ a year, if so why arent you?. Some of your numbers dont seem to add up either.

Someone correct me if im wrong here? i just dont know enough about JSA but someone will come along im sure.

Yes, I'd agree and expect the OP to get contributions based JSA for 6 months, also that the figures don't steem to stack up. What about HB and CTC as well?

Life is about give and take, if you can't give why should you take?

    Hello,
So sorry to hear your financial problems. I have asked citizens advice about benefits and was told I was entitled to nothing and then found out some time later that I could claim tax credits so don't always assume the advice you get is 100% accurate.
Some information below that I hope helps. It will be worth you ringing the tax credits helpline and giving them all your details. They will firstly ask for your NI number and both of your incomes etc.
I don't know how you stand with being unemployed and tax credits so have advised below with all I know of tax credits and how it is worked out.

TAX CREDITS I BELEIVE YOU ARE POSSIBLY ELIGIBLE FOR FROM INFORMATION GIVEN: (£)

    FAMILY ELEMENT 545
    CHILD ELEMENT 1690x2(PER CHILD)
    WT BASIC 1620
    COUPLES ELEMENT 1595
    MAXIMUM TAX CREDIT £7140

(ADD 30HR ELEMENT TO ABOVE £660 IF 1 OF YOU WORKS AT LEAST 30HOURS PER WEEK )

ABOVE IS EVERYTHING YOU ARE INTITLED TO FOR MAXIMUM TAX CREDITS THEN THATAMOUNT IS REDUCED DEPENDING ON YOUR INCOME. SEE BELOW FOR EXAMPLE)

I BELIEVE THAT IF YOUR COMBINED ANNUAL INCOME IS BELOW APPROX £6000 THEN YOU QUALIFY FOR MAXIMUM TAX CREDITS ABOVE AS LONG AS ONE OF YOU WORKS AT LEAST 16HOURS PER WEEK.
YOU WOULD ALSO QUALIFY FOR 80% OF ANY REGISTERED CHILDCARE YOU MIGHT NEED BASED ON YOUR PRESENT INCOME.

EXAMPLE OF HOW TAX CREDITS ARE AWARDED FOR WHEN YOU RETURN TO WORK-

EXAMPLE-IF YOUR COMBINED ANNUAL INCOME £20000
    LESS THRESHOLD 5220 –
    EXCESS INCOME 14780

(YOU NOW HAVE TO DEDUCT 37% OF YOUR EXCESS INCOME-ANYTHING EARNED ABOVE THRESHOL £5220)

    EXCESS INCOME 14780 / 100% X 37%=£5468.60

    SO CONCLUSION:-

    MAXIMUM TAX CREDITS IS £7140
LESS 37% OF EXCESS INCOME £5468.60-
ACTUAL TAX CREDITS AWARDED £1671 PER ANNUM FOR INCOME 20K

*THIS IS ALL BASED ON BOOKLET I HAVE FOR 2005/2006 SO AWARD WILL BE SLIGHTLY HIGHER NOW.

    HOPE THIS HELPS.

THE HELPLINE NUMBER IS 0845 300 3900 TO CLAIM OR DISCUSS

Heres one in case you havent heard it..my new claim for JSA is currently being processed.Today,I received a letter(not from the Housing Benefits office but from Jobseeker Plus) stating that before they can proceed further, they need some additional information.Having already informed them I live in a shared house, the information they required was.1.Who was I sharing with and why.2.Their dates of birth and 3.If They or I considered ourselves 'a couple'!
I rang the number on the form to ask advice and their reply was that none of those questions applied to me-BUT..they needed to know if there was a lock on my bedroom door.Sorry,is it me or have I missed something here????How does this affect my chances of findin a job??:rotfl:
