Scrapping a car in Portsmouth - Can i get money for it?
Have a 1997 R reg Vauxall Corsa. The tax runs out end of this month, so does the MOT and not needing 2 cars in the fmaily any more i just want to get rid. It runs reasonably well, is in decent nick but i know it will probably cost me 200 quid to tax and MOT it and i just dont want to spend that money, and then have the hassle of selling so was just going to scrap it.
Question is...i want to get paid for scrapping it. Shall i just call up vehicle dismanlers and see if they want to buy it? Do i also have to get a cretficiate to say it is being broken?
Need to sort this out in the next couple of days as the tax and MOT run out end of week...eek!
webuyanycar have given me an online offer of 210 quid (subject to viewing) but having a read some comments about this company am not so sure.
Any help appreciated.
Thanks guys!

seems such as waste, see if you can give it away, also ring a couple of college's up and see if they want it0

Check you local paper adverts, should be some listed, you should get a minimum of £50 and they should do the relevant paperwork to be sent to the DVLA to say it has been scrapped.0

Saw a program on TV a scrapman got £400 to process a car (I assume that's profit per car) which meant he could afford to buy them at auction for £250bid plus the buyers fee.
Phone around many scrap yards ask how much they will give you,
1. if you deliver to them,
2. if they pick up from you
Knowing this I would be looking for a £100 minimum these days.
If the scrap dealer is not electronically linked to the DVLA you should fill in the red part of the V5 (section 9) and retain it and send it to DVLA. But in todays world most are linked to the DVLA online and the scrap man should inform the DVLA on your behalf then send you a certificate of destruction within a week or two, there should be no problem.
If you don't get a cert of destruction, you can check the online status of the vehicle, or phone DVLA, or phone the scrapman and ask that they send it to you.
Once you have the certificate, retain it safely atleast until you have confirmed the online status of your vehicle has changed to "this vehicle does not exist".0 -

Global steel price has plummeted again over the last couple of weeks. Scrap cars are probably worthless again as a result.British Ex-pat in British Columbia!0 -
I went to webuyanycar with an offer of £810 and came away with £750, no problems.
Would you be happy with £150? That's what they'll offer you roughly.
I was well-chuffed with 750 for my heap, personally.
They won't give you cash but the money does clear within 4 days.0 -
Why not just ebay it?
It sounds an OK car. and looks perfect for a learner.
I would happly buy it off you for my girlfriend if your local!0 -
Beware of selling a turkey to some nutter at your home address.
That swung it for me using webuyanycar.
I didn't want any retribution on my house/wife/kids.
Maybe unlikely but it happens.0 -

Yes, ebay certainly attracts buyers from the bottom end of the gene pool.0 -
You may be able to give it to someone who's learning to drive. They'd have to tax, mot and insure it anyway so it saves them the cost of buying the car. My current car was a freebie from a family member and appreciated it very much. Plus I can't grumble at spending a couple hundred on repairs if and when it needs them to keep it going as the car cost me nothing in the first place.0
