calling the uk from rome

hi i am taking my wife for a 3 day break in rome on the 12th october, and we will be needing to call back home a few times each day, and i was wondering what would be the cheapest way of calling
i would prefer to use my mobile if possible but dont mind buying a phone card
i am with virgin on contract and have 150 mins and 150 txts but i dont think theat includes international calling
