What did the messages actually say?
  • Those are the original versions of files that get copied to the hard disk during Windows installation.

If you're trying to repair Windows, try following the instructions here.
  • They are packed files that are to be extracted by an inflation utility. Windows does this for you during install!

On the XP Cd, find this (Assuming D: is your CD Drive Letter):

    D:\XP\i386

Tell windows to look for all the files in there! All the ones you want will be located there, I promise :)
  • The error message was 'windows cannot copy the following file' it then gave you the option to skip it without copying that file!!!

Can these files be drag/dropped or copy/pasted from the cd into the windows file?

if so how is it done and where in windows does it need to go

Failing that what is the best way to copy all my data including emails(outllok express) most importantly?

    Cheers

  • Make a folder on the Hard disk, copy the files from the location I mentioned on the XP CD above, and place the uncopyable files in the new folder. Then point windows in taht direction and it should all be fine.

There is a I386 folder arleady on the drive, but better not to overwrite anything in there!
  • Thanks for all the help

Think i might have to bite the bullet and format the hdd

What is the best way of keeping all the data on the disk? especially need to keep emails (outlook express)

    Cheers
