Where in the world????

Options
I wonder if any of you wonderful people could explain this strange phenomenon to me, as I am completely unable to comprehend it:-

If I go into Woolworths, Asda or Tesco to buy a computer game, I hand over the readies and hey presto - it's mine!

If I go into Maplins or Argos to buy a computer game, I hand over the readies and they ask me if I'd like to provide my contact details. I refuse, they hit the 'skip' button, and hey presto, it's mine!

If I go into PC World or Currys to buy a computer game, I hand over the readies and they ask me if I'd like to provide my contact details. I refuse, there is no 'skip' button only a 'cancel' button, and when they press the 'cancel' button the till voids the transaction. So I am unable to buy the game.

Now is it me, or ? ? ? ? ?

Dave (gives up in disgust and orders game from Amazon and saves about 40%)

i think its to stop people buying loads of games and keep bringing them back for a refund. if they can log who buys it and if you need to return it, it will check to see how much stuff you could have returned....who says you need to tell them the correct address?

most shops that sell games have a none returnable policy to stop people from just copying them and then taking them back. they dont need your details for that. when they ask for details it is usually to sell them on to junk mail senders.
if you are ever in a situation were they are the cheapest or they have the last one in stock in the area then just make up some details or give the details of a person you know who you dont like.

Don't remember that ever happening. Last time I bought a game from PC World I just paid for it. Don't think I've ever given my details or even been asked for them.

That really annoys me, I remember having a long discussion with a salesman in a carpet place once when I refused to give my details. I suppose yes the false addess is the way to go but make it obvious, like No. 1, Mind-your-own-business Street, Off High Street, Orkney.

I was in the US earlier this year, and I bought an iPod in Circuit city, and they weren't going to sell it to me because I couldn't give them a US phone number. I ended up with the manager over at the checkout, who put in the store's phone number for me.

But apparently their system won't let them make a sale unless they have a phone number to go along with it. It's all probably just a way of collecting marketing information.
  • They normally ask for postcode and house number which i find intrusive and possibly a security risk if someone close by is listening in as you purchase expensive equipment.
Im going to look up the post code for Buckingham Palace and see what that comes up as on their till.
