anyone heard of this scam
a cheque for £8500 was deposited into my account last monday by someone i dont know in london(i live in glasgow)the bank then put a stop on my account on friday without any notice or correspondance to myself leaving me with no access to my account.
i went into my bank on saturday and they said they couldnt do anything till today.
the outcome after several hours of calls and faxes was that the bank said it was a scam where the criminal puts cash into your account ie cheque and later purchase things from that account. there was £2000 in my account and i asked the question why if they had details of my card did they not just empty my account...the answer i got was "its just the way they do it".
they said the criminal had my card details and they had ordered me a new card and i would have to activate my card before my account would be open again or i could go into the bank where upon the bank would have to call the fraud department to take the block off for the time it took to do the transaction.
i just feel theyre giving me the run around with no straight answers
anyone else had any probs like this,im asking for compensation for my time wasted on calls and the total inconvenience they have caused me not to mention the stress

Where's the scam? The 'scammer' deposits £2000 in your account and then uses your account to spend that £2000."You were only supposed to blow the bl**dy doors off!!"0

thats my point the scammer actually deposited £8500 in my account and there was already £2000 so why not use my card details to take that. as i said earlier i asked the question why if they had details of my card did they not just empty my account...the answer i got was "its just the way they do it".
i have never heard of any scams where they actually put cash into your account and i think the bank is using that as a reason for a mistake theyve made or something else0 -
i havent heard of this either....bet they would have spent your 2000 and put you in an overdraft too...unless your really lucky and they deposit the money then get knocked down by a bus!!!!TO FINISH LAST, FIRST YOU HAVE TO FINISH....0

Thought a little bit more about this - could be a stolen/couterfeit cheque that they used. The money appears in your account, the scammer spends it, then the bank discovers the cheque is stole/counterfeit, and deducts the money from your account."You were only supposed to blow the bl**dy doors off!!"0

I still struggle to see how the scam works. Anybody can easily pay money into your account but it is much harder to get money out.
The only one I can think of is the scam where somebody gives you a sum of money and then asks you to return some or all of it by Western Union money transfer. The original money turns out to be fraudulent and the bank takes it back out of your account leaving you out of pocket.
However you would expect the scammer to contact you in advance to arrange to be paid. Unless the plan was to contact you later to say they had "accidentally" paid the money into the wrong account and please could they have it back. Seems tenuous though.
As you say if they really had your card details there would be no need to deposit any money. I think that was just a precaution by the bank. All very odd.0 -
I don't think it's a scam at all. What has probably happened is that somebody, when they are transferring money to another account, has quoted the wrong account number, and it's ended up in your account instead of the correct one. So no scam, just human error. What part of "A whop bop-a-lu a whop bam boo" don't you understand?0

I agree.
A bit like phoning a total stranger by getting 1 digit wrong while dialling the number of a friend.0 -

another update
the bank actually returned the cheque to me today,it had my name correct including middle initial eg Mr Michael J Fox and was from a Mr DI YI REN and the signature was chinese. They said the reason it was returned was because the account was now closed.0 -
The next time anyone of you receive a call, instead of fighting with them, why not offer to pay the amount, on the condition they give you there sort code and account number, that way, at least you’ll be able to track them down, if they refuse, then tell them the same applies, you cannot give your sort code or account number to some random geezer on the end of a phone :rotfl: :rotfl:Click here for Martins (MSE) advice on who to contact with Debt Issues - YOU HAVE NO REASON TO USE A FEE PAYING DEBT MANAGEMENT COMPANY- THEY CANNOT DO ANYMORE FOR YOU THAN THOSE LISTED IN MY LINK ABOVE.
All information given by myself is offered informally and without prejudice - if in doubt seek help from a qualified and insured professional0
