Treating and painting exterior wood

I have some wood on the outside of my house which is painted. I have neglected it for so long that the paint is now flaking off. The wood appears to be dry and free from rot or damage, although it is more grey than brown in colour.
Is there a preservative I could or should apply, which would then allow me to paint on top.
Thanks

I would sand it right down and varnish it! My outdoor furniture is like that and thats what I was told to do by some guy in Focus!lolYou may walk and you may run

You just keep on walking0 -
Ronseal /Cuprinol do a wood treatment for applying before painting.
Two tips based on my own [STRIKE]mistakes[/STRIKE] experience -
1) Make sure you sand all the loose paint off, taking off a little bit more than you think you need to!
2) If using conventional gloss paint leave two days between coats to give adequate time for each coat to dry out.
Major tip - dry weather this weekend so make the best of it for outside painting.0
