Unauthorised Debit?

in Credit cards
A friend stayed at a hotel and paid the bill by credit card when she checked out. The hotel subsequently took a further amount from her credit card without contacting her. Her credit card company refused to remove the debit, saying that hotels and care hire companies are entitled to make unauthorised charges in this way.

By definition, no-one is entitled to make an "unauthorised charge".
Your friend should contact the hotel, and find out precisely what the charge was for. If it was for goods/services she did not receive, then she should get back on to her bank, and if the person she speaks to refuses to co-operate, then speak to a supervisor/manager.0 -
I have a feeling your friend will have agreed to some terms and conditions with the hotel that authorise them to charge the card appropriately. (Important moneysaving lesson: ALWAYS read the small print).
Was the charge for a genuinely incurred expense (room service, phone calls, minibar, stolen towels... etc)? If so, there's not a lot you can do.
If the fact that the charge was made is disputed (e.g. you paid the bill in full, can't think of any additional expenses incurred) then take this up with the hotel. It might be a genuine mistake.student100 hasn't been a student since 2007...0 -
To add to above posts if hotel won't clarify what the extra debit is for then go back again to credit card firm and firmly state that this is not her transaction and ask for chargeback.0

In my experience when you check in and sign whatever it is you do you are also authorising them to take payment for anything you may not declare when checking out ie mini-bar!
Would have thought they would forward on a receipt or something!0 -
I stay in hotels regularly on business and the worst culprits IMHO are Ho****y I*n E*pre*s, who regularly charge additional amounts, which, strangely enough usually equal the difference between a correctly booked promotional rate and their rack rate.
I've had numerous apologies and instant refunds from this lot!British Ex-pat in British Columbia!0
