I had a problem with no broadband connection last week which was incorrectly diagnosed as a modem fault so the helpline ordered me a new 256 cable modem. The fault was then found to be accross this area and once fixed it began working again.
The new cable modem still arrived today though and I am not sure whether to instal it as I have never had or knowingly had a problem with the original motorolla surfboard sb4100 modem I have had since yr 2000.
I have 2 pcs and 1 laptop running off this using a linksys wireless g router model wrt54g and I'm on the basic 2mb speed.
Should I stick with the surfboard or instal the new 256? Are thre any issues with the 256?
They have told me I cannot go back once its upgraded.

I would upgrade to their latest modem, which can handle faster speeds. History of all of their modems here.
Odd
Ive had mine 4 years and its not on the list. Mines a motorola SB5100
Ive been having broadband issues for months (well my whole area has) with them and got them to cancel ALL fees this month and theyre about to upgrade my modem too:idea:0 -

Yes I should have said later modem. There are obviously various different models in use across the country. The last one that I saw was the blue NTL 250 but Virgin branded ones have appeared more recently. Blue text on this forum usually signifies hyperlinks, so click on them!..:wall:0 -
I did try to instal this modem but when I called Virgin to get it activated it would not work. After trying to activate it exactly the same as it was wired up with the motorolla before which was ethernet to router then to pc and it didnt work the tech man told me I would now have to have it directly wired to the pc without the router. I said obviously I wasnt going to be happy with that as I'm using 2 pcs and a laptop off the router and it was working perfectly fine before I installed the new modem and rang. He said the router must have gone faulty (within 5 minutes!) I really wasnt happy because it would be one hell of a coincidence if it did in between swapping modems. He told me to directly link the ethernet to the pc rather than through the modem then pc to try it which I did and it still wouldnt work directly wired.
He then said to reinstal the old motorolla modem so now I'm back to that again. Its always been ok but I'm wondering if that goes faulty in the future whats going to happen if I cant get a new one to work.Thanx

The latest one the NTL 256
cheers for that
Well the ONLY reason theyre upgrading the modems is for extra speed. So for now (like im now GOING to do) stay with the Motorolla and hopefully theyll get a whole NEW modem out soon that DOES work.
Im going to keep an eye out for this actually:idea:0 -
I think that NTL 256 was out in about June 2008 so not sure how often they make new ones, I wonder why they don't call them Virgin modems.Thanx
