Hi,
Has anyone used this shampoo before? Is it any good?
My dog has been getting bumps under his skin ad since coming back from holiday has been loosing fur etc. We have to keep his coat on him to stop him itching it. The vet has carried out all the test, blood, allergy, mange you name it and they have all come back negative!
Any ideas?

Hi
Yes I have used it on my dog, she started to get these dry patches and some developed into small scabs for some reason.
The vet gave us this, think it cost me 12.00 for a small bottle.
Doesn't smell great and you have to apply it to the dog and let them stand for 10mins (not easy when the dog hates a bath...think it might sting a little too?) and then rinse off.
I found her skin cleared after 2 washes, I am sure I had to use it one week and then again the week after.
That was about two years ago and I still keep it for any flare ups which are few a far between, don't make her stand for the full 10mins and seems to do the trick......hope this helps a little.0 -
Hi,
Thanks pamelab21 - did you dog also have the hair loss and the bumps and do the tests as we can;t think what else it could be and did the tests straight away.
So do you need to apply this every week then as I thought dogs should be bathed everyweek?
We are seeing the vet tonight so am going to ask her for this shampoo.0 -
No she didn't have the hair loss and the bumps nor did it get to the testing stage, I just took her to the vets with the skin issue and she gave me that to try and it worked for her.
I normally bath her once every 8 weeks but I am sure due to the nature of the problem it had to be once a week until the problem cleared.....I guess it could be worth a try.....do you mean you normally bath your dog once a week anyway or is that typo? If bathing once a week maybe that is irritating her skin?
What type of dog do you have?0 -
Hi,
Oh I see you treated it beforehand then! I suppose at the start it will be frequent and then less afterwards when it starts to clear.
No we don't bath him once a week at present, I just theught we might have to to make sure it works. We have a dobermann.0 -
We used this for years on our dog, Max (a westie) who was prone to really bad skin conditions, He used to have really dry and irritable skin which would go really hard and scabby, especially on his underneath and he lost alot of fur underneath and on his paws too.
This stuff doesnt smell great and the cost can add up but it does work. We bathed him probably every fortnight and his skin did improve alot but he was using this shampoo for years.
What we found worked wonders for the dry and irritable skin was vaseline. We would smother his paws in it then pop babys socks on him so he couldnt lick it off and we covered his underneath in it too. It too alot of patience and applications but it worked wonders, miles better than the shampoo ever did. We did have to apply the vaseline several times a day for a few years but eventualy we got him to a point where all his fur grew back and the skin was normal again.0 -
I found this info on the Malaseb shampoo:
Amounts to be administered and administration route
Dogs: As a general rule, shampoo twice weekly until the symptoms subside and weekly thereafter or as necessary to keep the condition under control.
Wet the animal thoroughly with clean water and apply Malaseb Shampoo to the animal at several points and massage into the coat. Use sufficient to raise a lather on the coat and skin. Ensure that the shampoo is applied around the lips, under the tail and between the toes. Allow the animal to stand for 10 minutes, then rinse off with clean water and leave to dry naturally in a warm, draught-free environment.
The 250 ml bottle, for example, provides approximately 8-16 treatments for a 15 kg dog, or 5-10 treatments for a 25 kg dog or 25 cat treatments, depending on coat thickness.
Hope this helps.0 -
Thanks for that, I thought we would need to apply a bit at the start! Let's hope the vet agrees and that it works as well.
My dog's hair loss is on his back mainly, not really his underside.0 -
the vet prescribed it for my westie when he had itchy feet - I just use baby shampoo on him now and it seems to do a good enough job.
I only use non-bio washing powder on his bedding
I rinse his feet in the shower if they are extra dirty
I changed his food to one specifically for sensitive skin
I encourage him to eat fresh carrots and broccoli as a 'treat'0 -
Oh - Ill speak to the vet about the sensitive skin food as we currently feed him Hill's Science Plan for Large Breeds and they do one for sensitive skin as well.
Are the carrots and broccoli good for them?0 -
when we are having veg with our dinner I always mix some in with her food, I always thought that it was good roughage for them (or so our vets told us)!
She will only play with raw veg though, will not eat it.
God they are like kids aren't they!0
