  • Home Bargains (and Quality Save, which has a different proprietor but buys from the Home Bargains pool) specialise in end of lines, short-dated goods and overstocked lines. Many people sell to them because they know that they can move on their stock - if a new line is coming out they can clear their soon-to-be-old line on quickly. Home Bargains works on high turnover and low profit margins. Regular supply of a line is not the name of their game. Works for them, and can net you a bargain. Other times the shops could be accused of selling tat. It all depends what you went in for. A retail car boot sale perhaps.....but that's not to put it down, because if you find what you want it can be great.

I went in today (29th) and there was none left, shame I wanted one for my daughter. Bought 10 bars of Nestle double chocolate for £1 instead!

I think thats one of the reasons people like HB so much, and why it is so successful - it's an ever-changing product lineup. Everytime you go in, you can be pretty sure they'll be something new.

Most of the stuff on offer is close to the sell-by date, but if you do your shopping weekly, I've never found it to be an issue - it's exactly the same as something you would buy in a supermarket, but you can't leave it in the cupboard for months.

Their profit margins are actually fairly decent too - one was to tell how much profit they make on something is when it gets reduced instore. Take for example the Nestle double chocolate bars, I believe they were originally selling for 39p (which is still half the price of anywhere else), now they are reduced to the price they paid - 10p. For a low-value item, a 29p markup is pretty decent. I personally think that have a pretty good business model - we get ever-changing bargains, they make a decent profit - win win ;-)

Forgot to mention, also bought Nestle Cookie Crisp cereal yesterday (50% extra free so 565g instead of 375g) for 99p.
And if I really were an angel, I'd float over your bed
Each night a different dream of me I'd plant inside your head
And if I were an angel, I tell you what I'd do
I'd appear in a vision and I'd give my wings to you

Bop it arrived in Cramlington today, they weren't on display but when I asked for one the assistant said they had just arrived and got me one from the back. I also picked up a glass painting set half price at £7 I think or possibly £6. Whichever it was, I paid double that in John Lewis last week so that one is being returned.
