Home improvements for pensioners

I have contacted my local authoritys who have told me there is no money in the pot.. and as i'm not on benefits i wouldnt get any help.

There are 2 people living at our house, me and my father (it is jointly owned by both of us with no mortgage). People have mentioned to my father that they have had their windows ect replaced by councils / charities ect or have been offered grants or assistance in house repairs. Most of the windows in the property are extremely old and rotting away. They are desperately in need of replacing, although as I am the only person working (my father is retired and receiving a government pension but no benefits) currently I am unable to afford to replace all the windows in the property myself. With the weather coming in the house is extremely cold for my father who needs the fire and heating on constantly. If there are any grants / loans / services ect that could help I would be extremely grateful if anyone could point me in the right direction?

  • Hi,

What I would advise is to firstly have your dad's benefit entitlement checked and remember that he may well be entitled to some help with his half of the mortgage through Pension Credit. And also a reduction in his council tax bill. I work in CAB in Northern Ireland where to have repairs done , we have to apply to the N.I.Housing Executive. Over there I assume it is the local council. It would be worth your while to call at your local CAB for advice on your Dad's benefits and for a referral to your local grants dept of the council. Maybe if you could get your dad on benefits it might be easier to apply some pressure on the council or local housing authority

I hope this is of some help
  • thank you for your help!
