Options for replacing a boiler

Options
Our current boiler - a dinosaur of a thing - has packed and rather than trying to fix it i was thinking of replacing with a combi-boiler and moving it. At the moment the old boiler is in front of a closed up chimney breast in the kitchen with a cupboard built around it and a flue into teh chimney stack (i believe its called an open flue boiler?). I would like to resite it in our cellar (same level as kitchen - house is on a slope) but have been told that it would have to go on an outside wall. This would mean loads of new piping to the other side of the kitchen and sticking it in an inconvenient position and removing kitchen cupboards. Is this correct or can it be put in the cellar? We have an old coal chute that would be real easy to open up for a flue.
Also we were given a quote to replace the boiler leaving it exactly where it is currently positioned - £1400 :o
Since I can see boilers on sale for under £500 this seems quite pricey to me to have one fitted.
Does anyone have any experience with this or any advice?
Thanks
Keldin
