Cant connect new laptop to wireless internet

as you say you have original laptop connecting no problem. can you at least connect the "new" laptop with an ethernet cable ?
Also with 1st laptop connected try this
click on START > RUN type in cmd then press return
When the small black window opens type in
ipconfig/all
The main thing to look for is the ip address, subnet mask and default gateway.
The IP address is the address of your laptop hopefully beginning with something like 192.168.x.y
the subnet mask should be 255.255.255.0
the default gateway 192.168.x.z
The default gateway should be your router IP address - this is what the laptop sees as its "gateway" to the network
in the above addresses - the x should be the same value - the y and z should be different
If you try the same routine with the other laptop aswell and post the IP addresses we may see a problem there, although the 2nd laptop may not be getting an IP address (due to the original problem)Don't try to teach a pig to sing - it wastes your time and annoys the pig0 -
I was wondering if you could help me with a problem. I have a netgear wireless router, only about a year old, and it works fine with my laptop.
You should be able to copy the settings across from one machine to the other. Well, assuming your mac address isn't being filtered as we've already discussed.
Any news on the router make/model yet?0 -
wee update - we managed to connect the second laptop to the router using the ethernet cable, but then it done something to my laptop, and made it work offline!! and this was when i was trying to reply on this thread!!
The router is a netgear 54mbps.
When the second laptop was connected to the internet, i checked the IP address etc:
IP address: 192.168.0.2 for my laptop, 192.168.0.3 for other laptop
Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0 for both
Default Gateway: 192.168.0.1 for both
I have typed the details from the first laptop into the second (WPA etc) and it still wasnt working
OH's friend is coming round to look at it tonight so hopefully it will get sorted, apologies, im not the most computer literate person!!
Thanks everyone!!

It could be that the router is not set to accept more than two IP addresses, so the laptop would have it's connection thrown outIt's taken me years of experience to get this cynical0 -

If so might be worth having a quick read through. There appears to be some sort of device registration facility by pressing the little button on the side.0 -

the default gateway looks OK - this is the routers network address and will be the same for all PC's / laptops on your local netowkr.
the subnet mask too, as everything should be on the same subnet that use that default gateway.
The IP addresses should be different from each other and they seem to be OK too. the first 3 sets of numbers - 192.168.0. < the same because they are on the same subnet - its like being on the same road - only the last number (house number) is different.
One thing that I notice is wierd though - is that the router default gateway and PC's are on the zero subnet.
192.168.0.1 sometimes equipment may not recognise subnet zero so would use the next one (like my router which is 192.168.1.1 )
Seems trivial but it can cause connection issues - I very much doubt it is cuasing a problem in this case but to just rule it out I would go to the router setup and see if you cannot change the router IP from 192.168.0.1 to 192.168.1.1 - the laptops would then need to be 192.168.1.2 and 1.3Don't try to teach a pig to sing - it wastes your time and annoys the pig0 -
i am going to get one of those 'dongle' thingies - is there any way that one dongle can be used at the same time for both laptops, and what do you think is the best deal?
In case you missed it Martin mentions a £5pm deal in the latest Tips email. It's in the "Top Deals This Week" on the right hand side of this page too.0 -
