Options
I have a packard bell on windows xp, its about 5 years old and has always worked til about 8 months ago roughly! My other half used to switch it off at the plug a lot despite me saying not to! now it won't turn on :(

When I switch on it says windows was not shut down properly and all that! then asks you to chose an option to start up, I have tried everything and it just freezes, Also when you try safe mode it was all the writing come up and it stops on something like ...CPQ on the end (will have to check to make sure!

Anyway I can't locate the xp disks so have borrowed a friends' I have her XP Disc, but it in and it goes as far as ...R for Repair... I Push R and it says choose one you want to fix - in this case it says 1. C:/ windows .. or something like that ... I push 1 and enter and it doesn't do anything! :(

I have knoppix on cd - although don't have a clue what it is or how to use it - I have loaded it onto computer and am stuck!! please can you help!

Its really important I get on this computer for my baby photos :(

Please can you help

  • OK. Sounds like a corrupted system file. It's fixable.

You need to boot the computer with the XP disk in the drive, and press R to get the recovery console as before. Then possibly, if it asks, press 1 to select the proper installation.

You should then get a prompt.

Type "chkdsk /r" and press enter. (Don't type the quotes though!)

This scans all the system files and if any are corrupt, it repairs them. It takes AGES, if I remember rightly.

Once it's totally done, restart the PC (remember to take the CD out.) All should be well, and the PC should be exactly as before.

  • Did you press 1 when it asks? That would select C:/windows, which is what you want to do.

    Did you type:

    chkdsk /r

    ?

Let us know how it goes.

  • I would recommend booting to a CD/DVD or USB stick. You could put a linux live installation on there (check if it can mount NTFS filesystem so that you can access your files).
Or you could put a BartPE installation on there (this is what I would do). It can be a bit complicated to set this up. You might be able to get a pre-made BartPE installation from a friend to make it easier.
Once you have done this you would be able to access all your files and save them to a USB or CD/DVD.
From there, I would try a full format and reinstall Windows.

Alternatively, use GParted boot disk to resize your windows partition and make another partition. Install another copy of Windows on the new parition and use it to access your files. This can be risky if the resizing goes wrong. GParted may be able to backup your files first though.

    Good luck.

If you cannot scroll up in Google Chrome, google:
    "google chrome scroll fix"
I have released a program to fix it.

  • Haven't used windoze for years because I use liunux. It's reading threads like this that remind me why :D

Anyway, have a look at the following which is gives guidance to someone with a similar problem, the agp440.sys file is corrupted, (yours is the agpcpq.sys so change that bit).

If that doesn't help also check out

Let us know how you get on

  • Knoppix is a linux based operating system on a CD. Before trying to resolve your problem I would use knoppix so that you can back up any important files (mp3, pictures etc.) onto a USB drive or CD . That way if it all goes t1ts up you have still got your important files
