Just found some cheap flights and would like to take oh and ds away for a coulpe of days. Any recommendations for a resort not to far away and a nice hotel? Would like to be near a beach if possible . Also does anyone know what the weather would be like in the beggining of October?

There are some beaches around Porto, eg Matosinhos or Povoa de Varzim which are easily reached via the excellent Metro system. It is very easy to get around on these clean, modern trams.
Porto is a lovely city, we spent a few days there in 2006 thanks to cheap flights with Easyjet. It's a bit hilly but the trams go everywhere. There is a great funicular by the Eiffel Bridge too.
Across the river are all the port lodges. Well worth a visit to a couple. Food and drink is great too. Plenty of good value restaurants, many of which do 'half portions' if you are not a glutton. Believe me, they certainly don't skimp on the portions there.
We stayed at a hotel on the Avenida Boavista, the Meridien Park Atlantic, near Casa de Musica Metro. It was excellent, and we got a good deal via hotels.com.0 -
thanks:Tthat's a help, but really i was wondering if someone could give me a personal recommendation.0

there is a beach very close to the city centre, the tourist bus takes you there or the tram or a cheap 5 min taxi ride, it was a pebble beach as far i can remember from a couple of years ago.
although there is a tourist bus , porto is the real portugal and not a tourist trap, and in my opinion a little grotty, although others would call it quaint and full of culture, some posh bits by the river/sea and grim in other parts
i would stay in the city centre, i cant remember the name of hotel i stayed in and i wouldnt reccomend it either, a couple of days is ideal, 1 or 2 weeks is too much0 -
I stayed in 2007 in Eurostars Das Artes 4* and it's a fabolous hotel , new, modern and in a very good situation (10-15 min. walking to historic centre)0
