It sounds like you have a fully enclosed mains water pressure system, does it look like this one here? It does have a thermostat which could probably be reduced a bit and you don't need a tank jacket.

  • Yes it looks like that but a shorter version. Where would the thermostat be? There is one on top of the cylinder but it is not attached to anything.

There is a hyperlink to the installation guide on that webpage here which states:
The immersion heater is supplied preset at 55°C. Turning fully to + sets to approx 65°C

so probably best to leave it at that setting.

  • I am very confussed, i cannot see a thermostat at all. I am sure the water is a lot hotter than 55, it is almost boiling, so much so you would scald yourself it we didn't have mixer taps.

Seems to contradict what yo have said previously
We are now trying to work out how to use the immersion best, so far we have tried heating the water for 2 hours between 6 and 8 am and it is cold by 10 am. Then we tried heating it for 4 hours between 5 and 9 and it was still cold at 8 am. I am getting fed up with luke warm baths and boiling the kettle loads. Does anyone have any ideas that will help us run the immersion properly?

  • It seems as if, no matter how long you have it on, you are heating up a small quantity of very hot water. I don't know much about this, but don't some tanks have two settings/elements - one to heat up a full tank and one for topping up? Could this be so for yours?

Sorry what I mean is when the immersion is on 24 hours a day the water was always boiling hot. I managesd to get some hot out of it today, I had ot on from 5 to 9 and used it at about 11 for a bath which filled and has now used all the ht water up.

If it's a new tank it may have two elements - one in the bottom for using with an Economy 7 timer and one higher up for getting a 'boost' of hot water during the day if you need it.

Both elements would be visible on the outside of the tank.

Do you have a controller/timer connected to your immersion heaters?

This sounds interesting, yes since I have been trying to use the timer I have been getting a small amount of hat water or it has cooled down really quickly.
