Minor car accident

I wanted some advice as to if I should contact my insurance company to inform them of a minor car accident which I've had during the weekend which was the other drivers fault. The concerning factor to me at this time if the other driver changes the story and places blame on me even though they accepted liabilty at the time.

We were at a standstill waiting for the traffic lights to turn green when the car in front suddenly reversed and whacked our car. The children were pretty shaken but that was down to shock so no serious injury. The car to my surprise had no visible damage however there is some play in the bumper which I'd like to get checked out (in case one of the brackets have been damaged etc). The 3rd party's car had a visible dent in their bumper but that was about it.

As this was minor would it still have to be reported to the insurance company or even Police?

TIA

Pete

IT does sound a bit iffy to me, might be worth informing the police for advice if nothing else.
You might find they claim for all sorts including half a dozen passengers with whiplash?

No need to report it to the Police unless the third party drove off without exchanging details. Definitely report it to your insurer - there are many chancers out there who would report it to their insurer as you driving into the back of their car. Were there any independent witnesses to the accident?
  • No independent witnesses other than my wife and two children travelling with me. The car that reversed into me was a leased car so the driver told me. They gave me their details including the lease firm contact details.

I took some photos but that's about it.

You've done everything correctly so far. Just need to inform the insurers. Be prepared for premiums to possibly go up though although that's not a definite, just a "they might".
