Council Tax

My flat mate has missed payments (was very late with payment one month) and was £9 short one month on his payment which has resulted in a summary warrent being issued for the rest of the council tax for the year to be paid in full. I was aware he had been late with his payment in June as a letter came in and I told him about it, so he paid the June/July amount but was £9 short - which I was not aware of until now.
I would like to know what effect this warrent will have on my name, future lendings etc. To say I'm angry with my flat mate would be putting it lightly. I'm in Scotland, which I imagine would make a difference on the advice.

As long as the remainder of the whole years tax is paid in full, immediately, I doubt it will affect either of you :)

I'm not sure if it's different in Scotland but I think it would have to be seriously overdue for it to have got this far. I have missed a couple of payments but they don't really mind. I have contacted them and it has now been spread over the remainder of the year.

I agree with Premier though, I'm sure if they are paid in full then there will be no further effect on either of you.

  • well our council are cracking down on late payments, and said it was unfortunate that it was over £9 but that was it.

Hi Summary warrants issued in Scotland for Council Tax arrears do not appear on credit records.
However it sounds as if your friend has lost the right to pay in instalments. He will be able to make an arrangement to pay off the arrears as long as he speaks to the council before the warrant is issued to the bailiffs.

    Hope this helps
