damage to home after central heating install???

Hi,

Looking for a bit of advice. My mum had a local (Dundee Scotland) company put in a central heating system (new boiler and heaters) but while they have completed the job she has a few concerns about the quality of the work and the mess they have left her house in.

She was quoted the job would take 3 days but it ended up taking 8 days. The crew have left dirty stains on 3 carpets within the house. (she had originally lifted the carpets but the crew laid them back down at the end of the first day) She has tried to clean one of the carpets and the stains are not coming out - it is black oil based stains. Every day there was dirty smears on wall paper through her house where dirty hands had been. One day she came home to mud all up her hallway which had been tracked in by the crew. She has found at least 3 handfuls of nails, screws and hatchet saw blades in her gravel driveway. They even left the attic light on! They have also left a toolbox in her garage which contains a drill worth a couple of hundred pounds!!!

Being a pensioner and on her own she is now worried that they have been as careless with the plumbing work. She knows she can have someone from corgi out to check the work so will do this.

She phoned the company to talk about her concerns with the mess she has been left with but the owner was not in and has not returned her call. She has since sent a letter detailing her concerns with the damage to her house and awaits reply this week.

She has yet to receive a final invoice for the work and the certificates guaranteeing the work. So my question is what should she do? Can she make claim against the company for the damage to carpets? ie for the carpets to be cleaned professionally or replaced?

She went with this company for the worschester boiler and the free 5 year guarantee but part of this guarantee is that the boiler is serviced annually - would this have to be with the same company? The company is corgi registered and with SNIPEF.

Thanks in advance for any advice and help. I live away from her so would like to be able to tell her a realisitc course of action.

tell her to keep 10% of the invoice price back until the damage has been rectified.
also she doesnt need the installing company to annually service the boiler.
    Get some gorm.
  • thanks - she is just a bit worried and will get herself in a wee tizz about it. Will pass it on.
  • .. and if, despite her letter, the company won't play ball, shove some pictures on here and name and shame so that other people don't get caught out in the same way.

You might want to suggest to the managing director of the company concerned that he read this thread. Can he really afford to have perhaps thousands of people avoiding his company like the plague? Never underestimate the power of mse!
