advice / help please re: comparison searches

Options
Hi all,

I hope you can clarify this query i have. I am currently looking in to changing to a capped/fixed tariff for my elec/gas. I have carried out comparisons on moneysupermarket, energyhelpline and simplyswitch. The best offer that i have received is going through moneysupermarket - they are saying that if i switch to SP my annual bill will be £544 - this is a saving of £91.65 + £30.00 cashback.

As the cashback is better through Quidco - it is £62 - i decided to also get a quote from SP through them. The quote i have got is £645.99 which is actually £10 more than my current annual bill - however from info i have read, you can expect to pay a little more to get a fixed/capped rate.

You will notice that there is approx. £121 difference between the Moneysupermarket price with SP than the price SP have given me through their website.

When i have checked the details - Moneysupermarket have said that this price is based on a combined total of 8565kwhs (i have added the gas & elec amounts for ease) but on the price from the SP website their price is combined as 11011kwhs (gas & elec).

As there is quite a difference in the usage amounts i guess that's why there is such a difference in price.

What i want to know is.... if i went through Moneysupermarket, obviously i wouldn't get as much cashback but i would save in the long run as the price is much cheaper but is this the price i will get it for or can SP over rule once you have signed up with them and say that the actual price is different or do they have to honour the quote/price/deal that Moneysupermarket have made/stated?

Thanks in advance for your help!

  • I think you misunderstand what the comparison sites are telling you. They try to give you an indication of what the difference is likely to be. If you go to the suppliers site and get a quote from there on the same product (check you are comparing like-for-like) that is also an estimate of the costs. What you actually end up paying is what you end up using. Comparison sites don't quote special rates or products and may sometimes have old rates which will not be honoured by the supplier!
