I suggest you contact your tutors and have a frank discussion about the course and reasons why you have failed. Also, it may be useful to speak to a careers advisor and look at other options for you.

If there are extenuating circumstances behind your failure then maybe it will be better all round if you simply re-take your first year?

You'd have no further chances, funding wise, but you would be able to catch up on the work you have missed and hopefully get a beter grasp of the course.

Likewise, if you just didn't put the work in - so long as you are now prepared to.

If you have worked hard and failed then perhaps HE is just not for you?

Personally, I am a little bit concerned that you feel they are being unreasonable in not allowing you to progress until you have sat the exam in January. I'd say they've been pretty reasonable so far and that statement suggests you aren't entirely accepting responsibility for your situation. Apologies if I am wrong on that one.

Why do you think the system is unfair?
  • I had this problem 2 years ago as well. I really wasn't enjoying my course so didn't put in enough work to pass. I buried my head in the sand for quite a while until the letter came through that I had failed first year!

However, my tutors were extremely helpful and I was given a lot of help picking a new course which I would enjoy and was also referred to the student counseling services they offered because I had gotten so down about it all!

Like everyone else has said, make use of your university's help services, talk to your student union if you want, they will offer a confidential ear to listen to your worries, and make sure you let your tutors know that you seem to be struggling. They are all there to help you and despite what you may think do want to see you succeed!
