Help with BACS/NatWest

Hi-
I really hope someone could help me.
I've just opened a Kaupthing Edge account and am trying to transfer some money via a BACS payment from my Natwest current account.
However, after paying Natwest a visit they said they could only perform a CHAPS payment, and did not offer BACS. This is really confusing to me, since loads of other people seem to have no problem at all in doing this. NatWest suggested I get a card-reader and transfer money online. But is this really the only way I can make a BACS transfer? This really seems unnecessarily complicated.
Has anyone had similar problems? Can anyone help?

Yes - Natwest are useless.
I use the card reader thingy, but max is £10k per day.
They have also said they cannot do a BACS transfer (Chaps costs £23), although they can with autopay (for wages).US housing: it's not a bubble

I'm having exactly the same trouble. Went into Natwest bank to set up a BACS transfer to put some money into my Kaupthing Account. Queued for an hour and 15 minutes only to be told they'd never heard of a BACS transfer but they could do a CHAPS transfer for £27.
Don't know what to do next, any ideas???0 -
That is absolutely crazy, I think this has cropped up before, will be worth doing a search.
BACS is a standard free service offered by all UK banks on current accounts, and it's the standard way to move money about. CHAPS is only used where immediately transfers are required, and such costs a fee.
Do you not have online banking with Natwest? If you do, surely you can move money about like that, just to the correct account and sort-code.
Natwest staff claiming they don't know what BACS is, should be fired - that is absolutely pathetic. Would be reason for me to move banks!0 -
I don't have an online bank account with them, maybe I should set one up to make things easier? I have been with them since the Natwest Piggies came out, so maybe it is time for a change!0

I had to carry out a CHAPS with Natwest the other day, charged me £23 and then told me they could not carry out the transaction until after 12 noon. Rang me at 2pm stating it had been done wife then removed balance from account to another and at 4pm Natwest rang me stating CHAPS had not gone through as we had insufficient funds. The transaction then had to be done the following day no offer of fee back. They are incompetent.0
