Saved a fortune at LIDL

Options
I usually always do a big shop at Tescos every several weeks or so but due to being under the weather with flu I could only manage to get to Lidl, where I normally just buy bits and bobs, fruit and veg etc.

Anyway, did a main shop there yesterday, took me ages but the total was £63.68. I decided to input the grocerries that I bought into Tesco online grocery order form etc to see what it would come out at. I used Tesco Value/Tesco brand items or the cheapest alternative if they didn't have the item available, also BOGOF offers too. The total I would have spent on the same items there would have been £112.16!!! So, thanks to having the flu and being totally kaput, shopping at Lidl has saved me £48.48. I paid with my Tesco Visa and got points too. Took up a lot of the tips that are on the What to Buy at Lidl etc thread. Thanks to everyone who posted up.

Wow that's pretty impressive! Well done.

The ability of skinny old ladies to carry huge loads is phenomenal. An ant can carry one hundred times its own weight, but there is no known limit to the lifting power of the average tiny eighty-year-old Spanish peasant grandmother.

:T Brilliant savings, well done! :T

I didn't know that you could use Tesco Visa in Lidl  even when I checked the website it says they take Debit Cards but no mention of Credit Cards. Have they changed their policy now?

But Aldi don't take credit cards in case anyone is wondering. Aldi is closer to me than Lidl and it's easier to park becaue our Lidl is in town and people use the car park for the post office etc. So I use Aldi more - they're quite different and there are things I prefer about both.

Lidl better for fruit and veg, generally cheaper than Aldi I think. Aldi better laid out and quicker at checkouts because they put someone else on when there's a queue.

Not everything is cheaper especially compared to Smartprice/Value or own brands but when I've done what Smileymum did and compared, a whole shop at Lidl or Aldi usually comes in at 25% cheaper or more.

Also ... I'm done in half hour - I whizz past those middle aisles whereas I am always drawn to the home and wear section in Asda.
  • Queenie I shope every week online at tesco's but really need to cut down on my grocery shopping, like you if I'm in Lidl's I pick up a few bits and bobs (I think their fruit and veg are great) but I've never done my whole weeks shopping there, its about 9 miles away from us but even with petrol I would think a complete shop would be cheaper. The checkouts at our store are terrible, so slow.....but I may try and choose a quiet time and give it a go.
