  • He mixes things up there, was he some sort of puritan?
There's nothing to stop you drinking, gambling, listening to jazz (niiiiice) or the radio. Just don't fund all of that on borrowed money.

Puritanism - the fear that someone, somewhere, is happy.

Don't knock it, at least the Xmas shopping only takes an hour!
  • The writer of this absurd piece is Peter Oborne, a political commentator, not a financial expert. He has as much bias as many of the HPC (and HPI) people here and he's merely using the current state of the financial markets to push his views. He is regularly lampooned in the satirical magazine Private Eye as Peter O'Bore.

The 'barbaric' states like China have no internal market for their goods, so if the citizens of the West tighten their belts and stop buying luxury items and instead focus on debt repayment and the purchase of necessary goods, they will suffer. There will be mass unemployment for many of the people who have moved from rural communities into cities to work in factories, making all the material crap that the West thought it needed over the last decade.

China will have its hands full implementing social policies to support these people. Policies that the West have already had in place for half a century.

Peter Oborne writes articles entitled 'Why the US is now our great enemy', 'It shouldn't happen to a Muslim' and 'Muslims under seige'. Clearly he's no lover of the US and is now revelling in their troubles. I would no sooner give anything he writes any more credance than I would the rhetoric from Iran where they also think the US is their great enemy - i.e. The great Satan.

The world economies are too interlinked. The US consumes 25% of the World's resources. If they go under then so do the nations who supply them.

I have to agree. o'bore has no formal quals (as far as I can see) re econs. and no experience in the marketplace.

he was hysterically anti labour long before it became fashionable, and is using the current crises to put the boot in further.

he's very much the 'for-queen-and-country-jolly-boys-on-the-playing-fields-damned-lazy-working-classes-how-dare-they' ex public-school oik of yesteryear.

he's entitled to his opinion but his take on events carries no more authority than anyone who posts here ( and in some cases, less).

I'm not sure that many of those on here would imagine things will pan out exactly like this, or that they will think it is balanced writing. Someone has clearly given the guy the job of painting a worst case scenario to thrill the average Daily Wail reader in a vicarious horror-story manner and, as you've observed, it does make a good read.

It is always pertinent to ask, 'What if?' and this guy is providing a structure to think around. The one thing we can be sure of, however, is that the reality, when it arrives, will be a darned sight less predictable and even more scary.

I'm waiting for the Sun to run with the UK having to step into HBOS because they had mass toxic CDO's, some of which could be launched in 45 minutes.

it's a bad habit of people posting this one dimensional drivel.
the amusing thing is the guys that actually think it's going to happen just like that.

it makes for a good read though

DD's post is below in case the chimp has Ignore on still...

Ahh - a nice gratuitous personal insult. What Chucky post would be complete without that nasty undercurrent of suppressed personal rage? It's the most relaxed time of the week, Sunday morning, and you are already hurling derogatory epithets at strangers on the internet. Yet another intriguing glimpse into your psyche, revealed through what you write here..

Thanks for highlighting DDs post - I took a read and noted that the guy who shares your penchant for making personal attacks was posting at 7.50 on a Sunday morning. Nothing wrong with that of course - except that he is the one who has been blithering away making an issue of how frequently I post on this group. If he can't keep himself away at 7.50am on Sunday I have to question how much of the verbal bile he throws my way is merely projection of what he sees as his own traits onto a handy target. In this case, me.

Yes - what one posts certainly says a lot about the poster. Good to see that both you and DD have worked that much out given the time that you 'both' take to go back and edit/delete your MSE posting output. Maybe you should reflect on the fact that if you don't want what you spew out to stay on record then maybe there's an issue to be addressed about what makes you post that way in the first place?

Every pound less borrowed (to buy a house) is more than two pounds less to repay and more than three pounds less to earn, over the course of a typical mortgage.

It's a pretty 'taken to the extremes' piece of opinion but many of the fundamental points are sound. No real idea about the geo-political implications that he starts to go into but I do think that the USA has 'screwed the pooch' as it were.

Bottom line is that things are about to take a nasty turn for our personal standards of living no matter what way things pan out. There is no easy way out now and it's just a question of what way we would like our pain dished out to us.

My hope is that we get a quick process of deleveraging in the global economy and a quick process of house price falls in the 'real world'. The house market is an important economic driver and it's a must that the market corrects itself to sane, sustainable standards.

The longer that people mess around trying to prop it up, the longer the pain of the slump is going to last.

The only person throwing out the insults seems to be you MTF? What's wrong, do you not like having your alarmist posts critiqued?

Why do you post on here if every time someone has an alternate viewpoint from you, you start ranting and throwing around the insults?

As far as my postings are concerned, I never thought I'd have to provide a timetable to my activities, but seeing as you think are the Housing Board 'hall monitor'. The reason I was up at that time was to make breakfast for my daughter who is an early riser. After sharing a lovely breakfast of Sugar Puffs (don't tell my missus, I'm, banned from eating them) she went to play with her Dolls house and I cam onto here.

I'm now back on because I'm waiting for everyone to get ready - we're off to Delamere Forest (http://www.cycle1st.co.uk/delamere.htm) for a family bike ride and a spot of late lunch.

I may pop on when I get back, but we've got Grandma and Grandpa coming over for Dinner, so I might not be able to get on until after the kids have gone to bed and while my lovely wife catches up on Facebook.

That's our day planned, what are you doing? Another day in your bedroom at Mum & Dad's posting rubbish onto the internet? Ah, well. Have a good one? ;)
