Check your EDF bills!

Hi all.

I recently received my latest bil from EDF which ran from June - September and I understood this one less than the rest,so I rang them for a chat.

I had capped on August 2nd,both gas and electric.I was told I was not capped at all!
The guy told me that whoever had capped me pressed the wrong button on the drop down menu on their screen, and in fact I owed them money. From the 25th July-2nd August I was on the original rate, before the price rise.
He agreed to waver this, and put me on the correct rate.
So check your bills!
I refuse to believe it is just me....

On another note,I did also notice that my electric consumption has risen by a third.I live alone,am a low user and my bils are almost exactly the same, summer and winter, and have been for the last 2 years.
(I have a combi boiler for water and heating)

It is either my fridge freezer or my new 2nd hand telly, bought from E Bay about 3 months ago.
Telly is (Apparently) 5 years old.26" screen.(Not a plasma),with a large back.It replaced a 19",same design,which I no longer use.

Fridge freezer looks fine, seals look ok,and rearely needs de frosting.
I never have things on standby, don't leave lights on etc...So I am waiting for an electricity monitor from E Bay to see what it is that has changed.

My question is,would the 26" telly make that much difference? I have a digi box attatched to it.

Thanks.

Zolabud.

  • EDF are useless. They had my elec and gas readings transposed, and when I complained they refused to send out a meter reader. When they finally did and I made sure he got the readings right, some bright spark in the office "corrected" the readings again so it was still wrong. In the end I left them - got a nice fat cheque finally!

  • The 26" TV would use more power, look on the back and find a label it should have the consumption in Watts, could be approx 150-200 Watts at a guess. The digibox uses approx 4-8 Watts whether its switch on or in standby. Check the label on this as well. I have used a power monitor from Maplins (£7.99) to find out what each appliance uses.
  • Really Freddy...I will take a look now...
  • Hi Freddy.

12 w is written under my very basic digi box.

50 Hz on the telly.Does that sound right?

    Zolabud.
  • 50Hz is the mains frequency which is correct, but you would need the figure that is in Watts (W). Then we could make a rough calculation on how much it cost to run per hour.
  • Hi Freddy.I appreciate all this you know....

I can't find any other info on the label apart from the makers name and serial number....(JVC InteriArt...) Where else should i look?

    Zolabud.
  • The specifications at the back of the manual if you have one, but if we say the TV and Digibox adds up to 200W. Then for every 5 hrs usage it would be 1000W = 1kW = 1 unit of electricity. As you seem to be a low user of electricity 1 would guess you would pay 20p per 1kW (1 unit of electric)
So that would equate to 4p per hour to run TV+Digibox.
The 19" would have used about half of that.
  • Really? I didn't know that....

I am going to wait til my next bill comes in,to see if this rise in consumption is constant.I was blaming my fridge freezer, and was looking at Argos today to see about getting another one.

I will wait til my monitor turns up,then I will know.

    Thanks Freddy.

If you sign up for EDF Online Billing then you can enter your own meter readings. I send them a meter reading for both gas & electricity every month (electronically) and they send me a updated bill (electronically) every month, ergo I know exactly how much my bills are and how much I'm using.
  • edf are a bunch of muppets........we put in a final reading on day of move...........fine we paid what we owed then another bill came and i phoned to pay they said it wasnt my bill................fine .........a week later i got a baliffs letter telling me to pay the bill i offered to pay.................all sorted now but as i said.muppets
