Hi David
I make the Melbourne flight 4 times a year, so am very good at finding and getting cheap flights. Unfortunately you will not find flights much cheaper for that time of year at the moment. Prices to Aus have SOARED with the fuel costs. For the past three years, I've paid anything between £480 and £600 for a direct return flight - even in June this year I paid less than £600.
My November flights (which are similar to Feb time) are costing me £915 this year. I was gobsmacked!
It's always pretty expensive over the Aus Summer, but prices have risen sharply and I don't think you'll find much cheaper.
If you go direct to the Qantas website and say you are flexible with flights, they will provide you with a grid which shows mix and match prices so you can get the cheapest deal.
I have always found in the past that the cheapest time to book flights to Aus with Qantas is exactly 13 weeks before departure when they seem to plummet for a day or two, then go back up again. I have no idea why!
Also, if you go with an airline other than Qantas, Tuesdays are almost always the cheapest days to fly out, and Thursdays to fly back for Aus. I have no idea about that, either, other than they are the less popular days!

KiKi' <-- See that? It's called an apostrophe. It does not mean "hey, look out, here comes an S".0
