Bathroom refurbishment quotes

Options
Hello

We are looking to get the following work done on our bathroom:

Removal of old bathroom suite
Installation of new suite
Removal of all tiles
Plaster ceiling and fit new light
Install new towel radiator and chase pipe work into floor
Tile floor
Fit new shower screen
Install new fixtures and fittings
Tile walls all the way around bath and about half way up other wall
Plaster walls where old tiles had been and are not being replaced
Removal of all rubbish

One quote is £3689 + VAT
The other is £1480 (doesn't say if it includes VAT or not)

We intend to supply our own materials (bath suite, towel rail, tiles etc)

As one is less than half the cost of the other, I was just wondering which one is nearer the mark? Should we be worried about the cheap quote?! We are in south-east London.

Thanks

  • Hi,

I am in South East London too and this is the work I am having done

I have selected £2400 worth of goods from the bathstore.com in their sale and my builder has purchased them for me. A relation works for the builder.

I am having a total refurbishment including the repositioning of a new toilet and new basin and the installation of a new bath and a new thermostatic shower to replace an electric one. The room is approx 9ft by 5ft. I am having the walls and floor (currently lino) tiled (currently about 40% tiled which will all be removed by builder)

The builder is also installing a new extractor fan (currently an open vent), 4 new spotlights (to replace existing single light), new floorboards, a mirror with lights. He will also be installing a new radiator.

The builder is arranging for the removal of all waste.

The price for installation will be a fixed £3100 (I will pay cash) although we have yet to talk contracts

Not sure how useful this is but may serve as a decent comparison.
  • are these prices for labour only ??
  • My £3100 was for labour (plus £2400 for goods) = total bathroom cost £5500

    Total cost approx £3700
  • Yes, both quotes I've received are for labour only. We are going to buy our own materials (bath, toilet, basin and pedastal, heated towel rail, toilet roll holder, mirror etc).

I've spoken to the cheaper guy and asked how he can keep his prices so competitive and he said that he feels it's a fair price for a straightforward bathroom refit (the bath, sink and toilet are staying in their current positions), especially for a small room such as ours, so there isn't much tiling work to be done. He's given me the names and numbers of three people he's recently done work for, so I'll follow these up. If they're OK, I'll probably go with him.

Hmmm...well even if we allow two weeks work at the 1500 quote its 750 a week (is that cash by the way :)) Its on the lower limit but if i were being paid cash and my work was a little slack,i'd be tempted to take the job on though i'd have to give it a looking at first. £1500 is probably too cheap though so id stay clear of that one.

Are you allowing any contingencies? I only ask becuase if someone bought all the materials for me to do a job, i know for a fact that they would never remember every single thing. So do i dip into my stock of bits and fittings free of charge or do i wait for you to go and buy whats required or do i suppy it and bill you?
