I thought this was an interesting question about if the fire service will let you in after laser eye surgery so i googled it!

It seems decisions are on a force-by-force basis. Different laser companies say different things but all cover themselves by saying get it from the force you would be applying to.

Ultralase say: Some fire brigades will make allowances for those with laser vision correction. In most cases, you will have to wait 6 months post-treatment before applying. Check with your local brigade. Laser eye surgery treatments are generally acceptable for current employees, but check with your superior beforehand.

    Advance Vision Care say:
What do the Fire Service say about applying after laser surgery?
The eyesight requirements to gain entry to the Fire Service require applicants to have excellent vision in both eyes without spectacles or contact lenses. Some brigades make allowances for those who have had laser correction. You will, in most cases, have to wait 2 years after having laser eye treatment before being able to apply.

So it might not be as simple as your dearly loved bloke is expecting. I couldn't find the fire service for your area 'Land filled with rainbows' (lol :rotfl: ) but it might be worth checking their website too if you haven't already.

Where did you get the 3 months information from as I couldnt find anyone saying as short a wait as that?

sorry about sounding a bit harsh in my earlier post:confused:

I had the impression that this could have been a vanity thing as, as has been hinted at by other posts, corrective surgery is not often accepted for new applicants where vision performance is an issue because of the permanence ( or possible lack of it )of the improvements. Although, whilst 'in service' it can rarely be used as a reason to sack somebody.

Good luck with resolving the personal situation and good luck with the OH job if he is able to continue with the application.
    :D:D stay wonky :D:D

Oooh crikey, how it all changes in a day LOL

    Thanks everyone for their posts..
Pepe - dont worry no offence taken. if it was for cosmetic/vanity it wouldnt even be a conversation.

Have re-arranged consultation for when I can attend. so Im gonna have my questions ready. According to their website if they dont fix it first time, they'll keep doing it till it is fixed, and the consultation tells ou whether ur problem is fixable or not.
old OH we're not signing anything on the day so not to get his hopes up but we'll come home and discuss.
I think the penny dropped with him when I told him exactly how I felt so hes taken a step back to consider it a bit more.... its like a dog with a bone sometimes LOL

the 3 months wait was what he was told by a specific fire service that he applied for 1 month back. he called direct and was told that. however it does vary from service to service and also (apparently) on what you've had corrected, so could have to wait 12 months, could be 6 could be 3.... I just a good old fashioned straight answer.

Will hold my own at this consultation though and not be swayed to signing but good to get information and most importantly costings!
Shall just have to wait and see!

Thaks again everyone.... felt much better once I'd got it off my chest
