putting new putty over old

hiya,

There's some putty in a window that's crumbling out.
I don't really want to do it all from scratch, as I' not that handy. Can I simply remove the worst of the putty then fill it in with the newputty?

If I get 2 years out of it i'd be chuffed.

ta,

  • No /well yes but it will leak still and water will get into the wooden frame then you will need new frame in two years. Use a hacking knife and fresh putty and a putty knife, easy really, I had to do it and hated it , but you dont have a choice the weather will ruin the window frame for you.

After a few more years well been here +30yrs family made me get double glassing but I keep the frame going !

sorry but it all comes out -even primer and a couple of coats of gloss won't help for than about 3/4 years then you'll be doing it again
may you live in interesting times
  • hack the loose old putty out, back prime the wood surface where the new putty is going to sit, giving the putty adherence to the paint.when the paint is dry reputty and check if old existing putty has a gap between it and the glass,if so run a bead of putty along filling any gaps and cracks, leave for approx.,24~48 hours for the putty to harden, and apply oil based coatings on top.i would recommend if its exterior windows to use dulux weathershield undercoat and gloss, and for back priming and general priming use the undercoat diluted 50% with turps.this will last you up to 8 years protection as it says on the tin.ok not cheap paint but quality.last tip when painting go onto the glass 1mm or 2mm neatly.any other tips on decorating ask a professional as i am.
