Dvds (bigger size)

Can you buy blank dvds with more than 4.7gb or is there a way to extend a 4.7gb disc?

    You mean dual layer discs?

Single layer dvd's offer 4.7gb storage, dual layer offer double that at roughly 9gb storage.

You'll need a dvd writer than can burn dual layer discs. They're still quite pricey too in comparison to single layer discs.

Not sure about (ed) several years in terms of the consumer (not industry) but they've certainly been around for a couple of years.

Dual layer will drop eventually, just like single layer disc did (I can remember paying over £25 for 10 and paying £200 for my writer a couple of years back).

The next generation are Blue-Ray and HD-DVD which will store 25gb and 15gb in a single layer. They're likely to be very expensive when they emerge around May/June (from what I've read).

  • Just a little aside

A Blu-ray recorder has been on sale in Japan for a couple of years now. The disc’s require caddy’s I believe, though I’m sure a ‘caddy less’ Blu-ray recordable disc is being worked on if not already here. It’s the Blu-ray Rom (movie) version that every one has been waiting for, though they’ve just authored the first Blu-ray disc (Charlie’s Angels: Full Throttle ) for test purposes.

The grim scenario that is likely is that there will be a format war between Blu-ray and HD-DVD. Toshiba have said that they want to introduce HD-DVD Rom, with recordable versions to follow soon after the format launch.

Because of the different disc structures the two formats will be incompatible. Unlike the situation with + and – disc’s we are very unlikely to see a single drive that will take both Blu-ray recordable and HD-DVD recordable – madness!

The prospect of buying format specific software and the costs and incompatibilities that follow lay ahead of us…..
