System Volume Information folder - what is it?

I have noticed a folder on my laptop. It is called ''System Volume Information'' and is around 2Gb in size. When i click on it is says access is denied. Any idea what it is?

Problem with having access to internet is that i get asked by many to solve their problems :( Well at least i learn something on the way :D

    Don't know exactly what it is but since no-one else has answered I'll give you what I know. It is present on all NTFS file system drives/partitions (What Windows NT, 2000, XP and Vista like to use) and really, really shouldn't be deleted or messed with! Windows usually hides it for you to make sure you don't break it! It probably contains info about where stuff is stored on the drive, permissions etc. Not for normal users to worry about. Didn' realise it would be as big as 2gb though!

    It's part of the System Restore tool, storing restore points and associated information.
