Copying VHS tapes to DVD

I have several old (5-20 years) home videos of my kids, family holidays etc which I would like to copy to DVD. Argos are currently selling the LG RC1000 combi (VHS-DVD) recorder for £199 which should do the job (except it is Nicam VCR whereas my tapes are basic recordings - is this a problem?). Can anyone recommend this or any other device?

I believe it is also possible using special software and a video editing card in the pc but this may be too complicated for a non-techie like me.

Any help appreciated

Aldi are this week (24th November) selling a "High Speed DVD Creator" for £29.99.

    Here's the blurb

Burns directly from a Video player or camcorder onto your PC.
Built in Mpeg editor. Edit recordings and add music to your old movies.
Compatible with VHS, H18, camcorder and other video recorders.
Edit & store on your PC or burn direct to disc (DVD burner required)
USB 2.0 transfer rate. USB 1.1 compatible. Capture & encode in MPEG 4.2 and 1 file format. AV or S-video input.

If you have a DVD burner on your PC (about £35 if you don't) then this is a pretty easy and cost-effective way of transferring your old videos.

Similar solution to the Argos one. I got the Panasonic DMR-ES30 for my inlaws for the same purpose, as father in law wasn't too sure about using the PC to do it. Has both DVD Recorder and VHS recorder and dubs both ways. The DVD replay is excellent and has built in DTS etc. I got it from AJElectronics who were the cheapest (and it arrived within 24 hours of purchase).

The sound aspect should not be an issue.
